David Salariya's Book Series

David Salariya has a flair for book making and an eye for detail, he has spent a lifetime conjuring worlds for children - dinosaurs that dance, gladiators who squirm, and histories so grim they're irresistible. David is a recognised concept creator, designer, writer, and publisher of children’s books, driven by a passion for lifelong literacy, inclusion, and creative storytelling. Known for blending factual content with illustrations, innovative design, and humour, David has made complex topics engaging and accessible for young readers worldwide.

As the founder of The Salariya Book Company in 1989, he established the imprints Book House, Scribblers, and Scribo, producing award-winning titles across picture books, non-fiction, and young adult fiction. His backlist includes over 1,100 titles, translated into multiple languages and celebrated with honour of being the IPG Children's Publisher of the Year, three Times Educational Supplement Award winner as well as having books recognised by the British Book Design and Production Awards.

He has written books under the non-de-plumes of: David Stewart and Max Marlborough.

A Concept Creator and Book Designer

David’s approach to publishing combines creative vision, innovative design, and close collaboration with writers and artists. Over four decades, he has had the privilege of working with incredibly talented collaborators, including artists David Antram, Mark Bergin, John James, Carolyn Scrace, Giovanni Caselli, Shirley Salariya, Penko Gelev and writers Jacqueline Morley, Fiona Macdonald, John Townsend, Kathryn Senior, Penny Clarke, Scott Steedman, Alex Woolf and many, many more along with editors and publishers who collectively brought the books to life - all of whom shared his enthusiasm for creating books that educate, entertain, and inspire.

  • The X-Ray Picture Book Series: Layered, cutaway illustrations revealing the mysteries of subjects like the human body, animals, and technology.

  • You Wouldn’t Want To Be... An award-winning history series that immerses readers in the shoes of history’s unluckiest figures.

  • A Very Peculiar History: Pocket-sized guides packed with quirky facts, aimed at readers aged 8 to 80.

  • Timelines: Chronological explorations of historical themes, stretching across time and into the future.

An Enduring Legacy

David’s creative DNA is woven into every book he has worked on, from concept to design. When he sold The Salariya Book Company to Bonnier UK in 2022, the books David created and designed over the past thirty-three years are being re-published the Bonnier Hatch Imprint.

Looking Forward

As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the founder of the Salariya Stratford Picture Book Prize, David continues to foster creativity and literacy. His focus remains on working on new projects that celebrate curiosity, storytelling, and the joy of learning, continuing his work in children’s publishing.
